I get comments. Imagine me with an ascot, Hugh Hefner robe, and a chilled wine as I read the musings of an adoring public...right.

Anyway, here's Patio. No I can't quite figure out the sex or the name. Is it a person or a lawn accessory...can't tell. Can't quite tell.

So Patio (?) says:

Well, this is kind of odd. I've never had a lying blackmailing public official knock on my door and threaten me--illegally and I'm of the opinion criminally but I have to present a better brief to the DA--and give me an interesting story. Never ever happened. Of course, back when I worked for print media, which was a very very long time ago, people knew I was a reporter and that they had to be careful about what they said to me. Then again, if Jim Frank knew and truly understood the reach of the modern internet he really wouldn't threaten anybody. Everybody can be a reporter. I guess it was Jim's poor luck to pick on a guy who was an online reporter.

And for the record: I really think the Internet is built for rants and different experimental kinds of writing and reporting. That's why I'm here. I can guarantee you that its not for the money.

Now, here's something I wrote in response that I'm going to edit because I can edit things here where I can't edit the comments I write. Just not allowed.

Do you rent or do you own? If you rent, are you responsible for your landlord's land? Do you have to pay for upkeep if its not a part of your original lease? Is it okay for the code enforcement guy to threaten you with eviction if you abide by your own lease? I think these are big issues and they're certainly worth writing about as opposed to the usual car crashes and weather stories that trad media is usually obsessed with...

So Patio, really that's the presumed fake name that's been given (I hope.), writes something else:

Well Patio, and please don't take this the wrong way, but how fuckin' stupid are you? Yeah sure. The Wilkinsburg City Council can pass a LAW that allows for slavery. It doesn't mean that its constitutional. By the way, and here's a suggestion that they'll probably ignore but here's a suggestion for council. You need to make a distinction between major and minor repairs for tenants. Its one thing to spend a hundred bucks for a lawn repair but there are repairs to this property that could cost thousands. If you concede to the former, then you open yourself up to the latter, which could be catastrophically expensive future liability. Who knows what tomorrow may bring. I must never accept responsibility for somebody else's property or crimes. Its the principle of the thing.

Two, if you read what I've written and have the comprehension that exceeds a 10 year old, then you know that I've offered friendlier non threatening solutions to this problem. Hey, if you know some apartment dwellers who would like to garden then please send them my way. I'm perfectly okay with the city's Weed and Seed program coming in and doing a good deed. I admit no liability for the property that I don't own and will certainly not accept the penalties for somebody else's crimes but if its just the grass you want cut...well, that can be accomplished without threats, lies, extortion or blackmail. Or what I call the JIm Frank style of code enforcement. Oh, for god's sake let's not disappoint the neighbors, Patio. If you would like to keep things nice and tidy then give me your number and you can do it.

Three, and this reflects poorly on your reading skills, Jim has argued that the written lease I've signed is void. Are you routinely this dim?

Four, speaking of the neighbors you so cherish, some of them are also in clear violation of 302.4. I wonder if they've been cited or received warning of a possible citation. I kind of doubt it. Here's something odd that Jim told me several months ago. There was a house that was going to be demolished and he said something that once that was done "they'll be looking at you". I guess the question that comes to mind is who is "they?" I have to admit that I'm kind of curious.

Five, and you might find this depressing Mr. or Miss Patio but they haven't gotten back to me with a date for my board hearing. It's been about a week. If you combine the weakness of a "notice of a possible citation" with their slowness in scheduling a board hearing, then you get a strong sense that they're wimping out on us. I'll give Jim a call Monday and ask when or if they'll be a board hearing. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided that a mistake had been made...because its always a mistake when somebody can publicize the evil you're doing. No secrets.

Which brings us to Vinny.

As for being a lazy bastard, well that's partially true. First, I know who my parents are so I'm not a bastard, like you Vinny. I am lazy about certain things, however. But here's the thing: I'm really lazy about work that isn't my responsibility. Like my landlord's. Not responsible for that BP spill, either. Don't care if somebody named Vinny who doesn't even have the courage to give his last name--everybody knows who I am--complains about me not cleaning up the BP spill on my own dime. I'll live. Oh, and Vinny, you can come over here and cut the lawn too. You and "Patio" can go crazy on the horticulture. Think of the neighbors, who also have uncut lawns.

ITEM: You know, there just has to be a primary challenge for Arlen. By the way, Arlen's track record so far: He won't switch on his vote on EFCA, he voted against the president's budget, he's helping block Dawn Johnson--one of the few progressives that Obama has even nominated--and today we find out that Arlen is still rooting for his good pal Norm Coleman of Minnesota. It would be one thing to do that before the race. It's quite another now that we now that Norm has lost and that the only way he could win would be yet another Supreme Court appointment/coup. Of course, why should some privileged senator actually have to deal with the bother of an election of and by the rabble anyway. It fits Arlen's privileged "Shouldn't I always be a senator?" viewpoint.

I guess the question is who could make the best run against Arlen. Joe Sestak seems to have gotten the most heat and the most mention, perhaps even not so subtle endorsements from the Daily Kos frontpage and even Atrios. Bad news about Sestak: he's against the public option on healthcare reform. Here's the short version of what that means: there is no real healthcare reform without the public option. Nothing changes.

There is another challenger, again out of the Philly area, and his name is Joe Torsella. He doesn't have a website and we don't know a lot about him. We think he was Rendell's boy which means he's center/right, or at least a guy who doesn't mind selling off public highways to rich people just like the governor. He has managed to raise a half million dollars. That makes him serious. Related: Early polling not looking good for Sestak vs. Specter, according to Open Left. Bowers does point out that its early. Observation: This is the kind of race where a well funded independent or Hollywood "Al Franken" liberal with significant resources should consider getting in. But seriously, his arrogance is overwhelming, his obvious dislike for Democrats palpable. He's clearly telling us, "I switched to avoid Toomey, not deal with you fucks." And since Obama has clearly promised him support, come hell or high water (no matter how he little support or loyalty he delivers in return), he feels like he can shit on anyone with impunity.

I think Markos has learned a very important lesson: just having a big "D" doesn't make you a decent democrat. We really have to take a close look at the people running for office.

I actually kind of don't have a bank account right now. Of course, the reason I don't have a bank account right now is that my cousin's stupid ass half brother wrote me a 300 dollar check that bounced all the way to high heaven.

But if had an account, or as I dream in my sleep, then I would want photo checks that I could put my favorite photos on. These would be the kinds of checks that would have my personal artwork on them or Ansel Adams or the Jim Starlin Warlock era kind of pics on them. Have I mentioned that my dreams are vast and will fill up the night sky? Or I would prefer personal checks that came customized with really cool designs on them Perhaps, say, crayons or a picture of a violin. That would show those fancy people at the fancy Target store that I had some class. Tell me when my dream has become all too surreal and Salvador Dali for you. Tell me when you would be forced to spurt out: "Phil, that's just crazy talk. Cut it out before your mad dreams compromise our very reality itself...!" But I wouldn't stop. I would continue my mad and dangerous Lathe of Heaven like dreaming. I would add a couple of cats, a loving perky gymnast wife and a job I liked that paid decently. Go ahead. Call me mad.

Oh, and I would to make sure I could find such a site that made such checks online. That's my quixotic dream of the day.

Let's get it on! Just a couple of notes: Koop mostly does music by way of vocals. But this instrumental is very nice and of course the animation is beautiful. One very interesting thing I learned via Wikipedia: Koop consists of two Swedish guys who like to wear dresses, although that's not readily apparent in this live performance here. On second thought, the makeup comes through loud and clear. Does that mean they're artistic or really really gay? Can't tell. Great musicians and song writers though. Meanwhile, below, Loka is a brand new band on the scene. Here's what their myspace page say s: "Loka's multi influenced aural excursions tell tales aplenty, but not necessarily with a happy ending." They remind me a lot of jaga jazzist.

Why the Future Beats the Past or Why I Use Pay Per Post

When I began my writing career a very very long time ago in the early 80s you didn't have a lot of options in terms of publishing or places that you could publish. Here in Pittsburgh what that meant is that if I wanted to be paid for writing then I had to write for the Pittsburgh Press, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and perhaps the alternative weekly In Pittsburgh. That was it. My other option was chalk and sidewalk. Or perhaps hundreds of pages that would be written into a diary that no one would find or read and that I would probably misplace.

Now, if you're an aspiring writer, there's this thing called the Internet. There are so many ways to make money that I've lost track. Don't get me wrong it's not easy. Like anything worthwhile, you have to put a substantial amount of time and energy into it, but at least you have the opportunity. One of those opportunities involves the pay for blogging phenomena and one of the services I use is payperpost. Now, I confess, I can't afford a mansion by the sea from doing these posts but I can make a living while I write things that I find personally valuable and interesting. It's one of the very cool things about living in the future and makes writing in 2008 a whole lot better than writing in 1985. And the real cool part is that no one is stopping you from attempting to drive traffic to the site and make a living.

A Resource I Would Use If I Decided to Save My Money

Of course, one of the reasons I only have 68 dollars in my pocket and can only dream about no doubt healthy American consumption (see this post)is that I don't save money very well. One thing I didn't know is that it kind of matters where you put your money. Different banks have different rates of interest for the savings you put into their institutions. So, in the future, if I have any money and decide to save it, instead of blow it one of those beautiful flat screens that I've seen, then this site would be a resource that I would check out.

I currently have about 68 dollars in my pocket but that doesn't mean that I can't dream of buying a really nice flat panel television to watch all my, in all probability illegal, youtube clips.

Here are the specs right here:

ByDsign is releasing a budget priced flat-panel plasma display. The 50-inch plasma display features a 1366x768 resolution, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 1,000cd/m2 brightness, stereo speakers with SRS, and two HDMI ports. ByDsign has also integrated the "DCDi" microchip, which enhances image quality by reducing those rotten jaggy edges. ByDsign's 50-inch plasma display is on the market now for the low price of $2,948.

Oh, I'm only 2800 dollars off, or so. At the rate I'm going I should have the money for this by 2525. When that happens and Earth is a wondrous tech paradise , ruled by either the Vorlons or the Vulcans, I will need an installer that I would define as a great resource for installing my big screen lcd or plasma television, which I will one day buy in my imaginary alternate lifetime. But I just wouldn't go to any installer to install the wonderful dream television that I will probably never own, I would use the best home theater installation company.

I prefer a professional installer as opposed to my unprofessional imaginary friend Jaco who would probably drop my fantasy flat screen several times and then claim that its the product that was "bad". And I wouldn't have a Circuit City or a Big Box store do it partly out of spite and partly out of professionalism.

Of course, how would I afford the very capable install if I can't afford the tv. Its what they call a conundrum. This has been yet another episode of "Displays I Lust For and Can't Afford".

Is there a way to improve BET on J? I'd like that job as a programmer...

I've watched Mr. Hudlin for years now and I'm very impressed with his talent and his abilities...but I have to say I hate what's being done with BET on J. It's terrible. You've taken a station that was arguably the best music channel on the air (with material that was not being replicated anyplace else) and turned it into a wasteland of BET reject shows (The Christies? Good lord...how bored would I have to be to watch that?) and bad music that you repeat over and over and over again. Here's a thought: r and b isn't as good as jazz repeats because jazz is more complicated and it bears repeat listenings. You can get something out of Brad Mehldau solo on your seventh hearing...not so much for India Arie...Here's a question I'd love to know the answer to: are the ratings better for BET on J than they were for BET on Jazz? Even if they are better, who is the high brow audience for that awful model show? Golf doesn't win the ratings war because it get the most viewers, it wins because it gets the weathiest viewers. Jazz and classical probably won't beat american idol, but you'll get a better educated and wealthier audience.

Here's the small thing I'm asking for: Can you run Jazz Central, one of the best live jazz shows ever, more than once a day? how about two different jazz centrals a day? Also, could you please start playing jazz again on Sunday, the best day to play jazz? Or at night? Instead of repeating that awful 2 cents talk show could you play jazz central after 2 am, maybe even a different one than you played at 8 am? Ditto for the Knitting Factory, uncut with Williard Jenkins and your old World Music jazz show? I have other ideas as well, but I noticed that my posts have been deleted from the BET on J forum and all of my suggestions were ignored. If its different here, then I'll throw in my two cents about why you haven't asked Bill Cosby, who worships jazz, to do a weekly jazz show or why you ha haven't you tried to recreate poliitically incorrect (or any real news content for that matter) or why you don't play jazz dvds on the station, even on a once a week basis? It's just shocking...Do you hate jazz? If the answer is yes then I guess that explains the station...

So far no response from Reggie and that's disappointing. How about my suggestions? Well, last week, it looks like there were no Jazz Centrals at all. It was replaced by that religious show which I don't watch because I'm an atheist. Not that I mind that. It would just be nice to see those live musicians playing at a high level. Thank God for Youtube. Thanks pal. Of course, luckily, I had managed to tape a lot of those shows. Fortunate for me I guess. I don't suppose since you're a bidness man you could offer those concerts on google video for 9.99 per download or is that just crazy capitalism? So, let's see there, you recorded over 100 Jazz Centrals and now you're not going to play any of them? You won't even let me buy them so I can create some quality viewing on my own time? Thanks again, pal.

I've also come to the conclusion that Reginald Hudlin doesn't know a lot about jazz. I looked at his bio and he mentioned that he liked Weather Report's "Mr. Gone". Reginald Hudlin, I grew up with Weather Report. I have seen Weather Report live three times, once with Jaco. I served with Weather Report in the US Congress. And, you sir, are no fan of Weather Report. Mr. Gone is widely regarded as Weather Report's worst album. It got a deserved one star from Down Beat. Just for the record, their best album is "Heavy Weather". Just for some fun why don't you ask your programming director what was the best Weather Report album? He or she probably won't know and won't care. Probably some ivy league buppie who think's they're talented when they were born on Third base...Pathetic.

Hello Reggie suckup. Actually, I'm a freelance writer who works at home so unfortunately I can see firsthand about what's happening to the channel.

I'll simplify things for you. There are no more Jazz Centrals on Bet on J, except for this Sunday for one hour during what will only be Black History month. There are very few Knitting Factories being run (also an excellent show) and as far as I can tell no new jazz productions coming out of the channel. The Club Js aren't as well recorded as the Jazz Centrals were and features minor artists or great artists (Ron Isley) badly recorded. The R and B show Soul Sessions features vids I can see on VH1 Soul and sometimes even VH1 classic and are repeated so often that they literally make you angry. The non music shows are terrible both in premise and performance, and again, they're repeated over and over and over again.

Now, in Mr. Hudlin's defense, he may not have a budget to create new decent shows or even pay performance fees for old shows like those Jazz Centrals that hold up under repeat viewings. This is why I suggested Bill Cosby, who's close to being to billionaire, and who loves jazz as a financier of New Jazz Centrals that he would host (Bill Cosby introduced me to Sonny Sharrock a long time ago on some PBS production....). I might also note that billionaire Clint Eastwood is also a big jazz fan. They would probably want Dave Chappelle deals on the DVD backend but that's fine...I'm just saying that Mr. Hudlin is in a position to ask these guys whereas some negro freelancer probably isn't...

Does that make sense to you overly exaggerated black hero in yellow spandex dude?
